Effective Pitch, Geometric Pitch and Propeller Slip

Perbedaan antara pitch geometric dan effective pitch disebut propeller slip. Jika propeller memiliki pitch 50 inci, secara teori itu harus bergerak maju 50 inci dalam satu putaran. Tapi jika pesawat benar-benar bergerak maju hanya 35 inci dalam satu putaran, effective pitch adalah 35 inci dan efisiensi baling-baling adalah 70%.



Propeller Configuration

Threre are four main propeller configurations:
1) Pusher
2) Tractor
3) Contra Rotating
4) Counter Rotating
All the above types can be of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and more bladed propellers, usually small 2 or 3 bladed propeller are used on piston engine, 4 and more bladed propeller are used for high powered piston or gas turbine engines.

1. Pusher
This type as the name implies, pushes the airframe and is usually fitted behind the main plane or behind the engine.



2. Tracktor
This type pulls the airframe and is usually fitted forward of the mainline aircraft or wing.



3. Contra Rotating
This configuration is where there are two propeller units on one shaft, driven by the same engine, but rotating in opposite directions.


4. Counter Rotating
for example, the port engine propeller rotating clockwise and the starboard engine propeller rotating anti-clockwise, thusbalancing the torque effects.
